5 Keys to patience

I’m a work in progress when it comes to patience. For years, I had almost none. I was in a hurry everywhere. I hated standing in lines and waiting on hold. Impatient with everything and everybody. Slowly but surely, I’m making some progress. Here’s how:

The platinum rule

The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one would wish to be treated. It is a maxim that is found in many religions and cultures. Even Jesus taught the Golden Rule. But He also calls us to an even higher standard - let's call it the Platinum Rule. Here it is: whatever God has done for you, you should go and do for others. Now ... what would that look like at work?

You only get one chance to start

We've heard of 'paralysis by analysis.' In some matters, you only get one chance to start. It should be measured and approached intentionally. Starting deserves our best efforts and our focused attention. At the same time, things don’t happen until we start. You can’t steer a parked car … there has to be movement.

Hope is not a strategy

Strategy puts ‘legs’ on hope. You can’t talk your way out of what you’ve behaved your way into. If you hope for something to change, come up with a series of steps that’ll move you toward what you hope for.

A call to humility

The word ‘humility’ comes from the same root word as ‘humus’ which means ‘fertile ground.’ When a man is humble, he becomes fertile ground for God to grow stuff in … stuff like love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness and self-control.

Before honor is humility

"You can humble yourself, or I will do it for you." Sounds like something a bully might say, right? Actually, it's probably the experience we've all had at one point or another in life.
