What's to be optimistic about?

Have you ever known someone who had a disease or a disability, but who had the most cheerful personality and seemed gifted at seeing the good things in life? It’s confusing and inspiring at the same time, isn’t it? What's the key to being optimistic in a world with so much trouble?

Whether I like it or not

What does it mean to be content? Are we supposed to be satisfied by the circumstances around us—whatever they are? Are we expected to like this pandemic, the wildfires, various disappointments and this constant state of uncertainty? The Bible talks about a contentment that is independent from our circumstances. If ever we needed that kind of contentment, it's now.

God, answer me quickly!

When we ask a question or share a concern with someone, we expect a quick response. At what point did we decide it wasn't okay to also pray with bold, expectant urgency? No, that's not heresy, urgent, time-sensitive prayers are actually modeled for us in the Psalms.

Do you ever ask God for big, even impossible things? If so, do you expect Him to answer? What if He's looking for exactly that - a big, impossible prayer that's prayed with confident expectation?

Finding an anchor in an anchorless world

We live in a world rife with social unrest, political chaos, competing ideologies and pressures to conform (or at least look the other way). Our belief systems are always being challenged if not directly attacked. So how do we find anchor? What keeps us from being swept up in the storm or crushed against the rocks? As always, there's an answer that has stood the test of time, and it (He) provides all the security we need.

Nothing to fear but fear itself

President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his first inaugural address, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Yeh, right. How about fear of speaking up, or fear of public speaking, fear of rejection, or fear of missing out? We're all familiar with fear and anxiety in some form or another. So how does God factor into these moments?
